What a WhatsApp template is
On the WhatsApp Business API, any message that starts a conversation must be a template Meta has approved in advance. A template has a fixed body with numbered placeholders like {{1}}, an optional header (text, image or document), an optional footer, and up to three buttons. When you send it, you fill the placeholders per customer.
Templates are categorised as marketing, utility or authentication, and the category sets the per-message price. Meta reviews the wording and can move a template to a different category than the one you chose.
Getting approved first time
- Use placeholders in order with no gaps: {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}}. Do not start or end the body with one.
- Give a realistic example for each placeholder when you submit.
- No ALL CAPS urgency, no shortened links from URL shorteners, no more than a couple of emoji.
- Utility templates must be about a transaction the customer already has. A discount in a "shipping update" gets it recategorised as marketing.
- Add an opt-out line to marketing templates: "Reply STOP to unsubscribe".
From draft to sending
Copy the draft into your platform's template editor, submit it, and wait for approval, which is usually minutes to a day. Then it is available for broadcasts and automations.
